How To Make Walmart “Yeezy” Waverunners!

Updated: Jul 11, 2019

Introduction

There is no question about the desire for limited edition shoes in the sneaker market and the Yeezy brand has proven to top the charts, break hearts, and set up outfits time and time again. Some people love the shoes, some people just want the name, and some people just straight up see over priced Walmart Bo-Bos. After many messages in my DMs, I decided to say eff fighting against the bots on Yeezy drops, eff the heart break from having the dam shoe in my cart and the site crashing, and finally, eff taking a big giant L on these hypebeasts! I’m going to Walmart....I’m getting crafty...I’m making my own Yeezy!

The Problem/ Challenge

Imagine waking up early to be online and ready for the EXACT second a pair of limited sneakers become available. You hit refresh right at 9:59:59am and BAM!!!, it's you vs all the hypebeasts, sneakerheads, resellers, and bots programmed to beat the system and check out within seconds! Today is your lucky day, you copped your pair in your size and you're ready to flex on the gram. SNAP, no filter needed new shoes are posted and DMs are coming in... “Bro those are ugly!”...”I hope you are going to flips those!!”...“Those look like Walmart dad shoes.” -_-

Well I just spent $300 plus my morning on these ”Bo-Bos” and noone is respecting the flex! >:-/ Deep breathe, lets have fun with this. How about buying some Walmart classics and seeing what you guys would prefer to cop once I am done working my magic? Okay you talked me into it, challenge accepted. I’m coming for you Kanye... you're done.

Supplies

The supplies are pretty simple and easy. First head to Walmart and stroll through the shoe section, take your time as you may notice that every shoe in the aisle could potentially be your new pair of daily drivers! After you have picked the dad shoe of your liking (preferably all white so that it’s easier to paint) it’s time to prep and paint.

Once you get back home you will need Acetone or Nail Polish Remover and cotton pads. For best over all results you will need to apply these products to the areas that will be painted until you strip off the original factory finish. This helps the paint spread consistently and gives it a better stick.

Now there is no need to question which paint or brand to use because this answer is easy... Angelus Brand is solid all across the board, durability is as good as it gets, their color options are huge and constantly expanding, the versatility of these paints doesn't keep you limited to only one material, I can keep going but I will leave some fun for you to discover. The biggest trick is mixing colors to try and get and exact match but I also think that is half the fun!

Michaels craft store carries Krylon Matte Finish. I use this spray paint sometimes to protect the shoe once I consider it all finised, a couple light coats is all you need.

As far as paint brushes I like to use White Taklon angled brushes. It is worth picking up the variety pack so you have all sorts of sizes and types of options at your disposal. These are also available at Michaels.

(Optional): I went on Amazon and ordered some shoe laces that LOOKED pretty close to the same color as the wave runner laces, when I received them they weren't as spot on as I wanted but I'm going to roll with it.

Conclusion

To be fair, I had a lot of fun making these replicas! Maybe it’s because I actually like the Yeezy 700 Wave runners (one of the only pairs of Yeezys I’ve kept and not resold), or maybe it’s because I keep thinking “damn Adidas, I’ll do this for half of what Kanye gets.” Either way these shoes are going to keep dropping and people are going to keep waking up ready for the struggle of obtaining a pair. Most likely Walmart is right down the street fully stocked with blank dad shoes that are just as hype as your imagination...perhaps.

So what do you think, did these shoes come out close enough or are they not even close?
